10 Tips for Eloping in the Redwoods
If you’re considering eloping in the Redwoods, you’ve already chosen one of the most magical spots in the world. The towering trees, soft-filtered light, and quiet stillness make it the perfect backdrop for an intimate wedding day. Having photographed and planned elopements in the Northern California Redwoods and along the Oregon Coast, I’m here to help you make your day as stress-free and special as possible. Here are my top 10 tips for an unforgettable Redwoods elopement:
1. Choose the Right Location
The Redwoods are huge, with each park offering its own vibe. For this elopement, we chose Prairie Creek in Redwood National Park , but Jedediah Smith State Park is another fantastic option. Prairie Creek is known for its lush, almost fairy-tale-like trails, while Jedediah Smith is iconic for its towering groves and quiet riverside spots. Research the areas (or ask your photographer—you know, me!) to find the right fit for your vision.
2. Time It Right
The Redwoods have their own magic at different times of the day. Morning light is soft and dewy, while late afternoons can create that warm, golden glow. This elopement started in the late afternoon to take advantage of all that soft magic light in between the ferns and the trees.
3. Consider the Season
Northern California’s coastal climate is mild year-round, but it can still change depending on the season. Late spring and early fall are ideal because the weather is more predictable, and the trails are less crowded. Summer is beautiful but tends to draw more tourists, so plan accordingly.
4. Dress for the Environment
The Redwoods are stunning but can also be chilly and damp, even in summer. And depending on the climate that you’re used to, it’s pretty likely that you’ll feel chilly no matter what time of year it is here! The deep shade of the towering forests keep it cool year around. Choose attire that fits the mood but keeps you comfortable. Long, flowy wedding dresses photograph beautifully in these settings, and layers (like a cozy shawl or jacket) are a lifesaver. Also, don’t forget sturdy shoes for hiking between spots! The forest floor is often damp and soft, so good shoes are a must. Embrace those hiking boots baby!
5. Check Permits
Some locations, like the ones we visited in Prairie Creek, may require permits for weddings and professional photography. Make sure to double-check the rules for your specific spot. The last thing you want is to be interrupted on your big day. Or you know, just ask your on site pro, yours truly, which sites require permits, and where to get them.
6. Bring the Essentials
You’d be surprised how quickly the little things can add up on an elopement day. Pack water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and some biodegradable bug spray (trust me, those mosquitos don’t care that it’s your wedding day). It’s also a good idea to have extra bobby pins, hairspray, and tissues on hand.
7. Plan for Privacy
While the Redwoods are vast, popular spots like Prairie Creek and Jedediah Smith can get busy, especially on weekends. If you want a private ceremony, aim for a weekday or opt for a less-trafficked trail. Having a photographer who knows the area can also totally help you find those hidden gems.
8. Embrace the Adventure
Eloping in the Redwoods isn’t about perfection—it’s about celebrating your love in one of the most incredible places on Earth. Be prepared to walk a bit, get your dress a little dirty, and laugh when things don’t go exactly as planned. That’s what makes these days so special.
9. Work With the Right Vendors
Having a team that understands the unique challenges and beauty of a Redwoods elopement is crucial. Whether it’s finding a florist who can create a bouquet that fits the vibe or choosing a photographer (hi, again!) who knows how to capture the mood of these ancient forests, the right people can make all the difference.
10. Soak It All In
This day is about you. Take a moment during your elopement to pause and really absorb where you are. Stand still, look up at the towering trees, and listen to the quiet rustle of the forest. These moments are what you’ll remember most.
The Redwoods are truly one of the most magical places to say “I do,” and I’m so excited for anyone lucky enough to make this part of their story. Whether it’s just the two of you or a small group of loved ones, your day deserves to be as special and unique as your love.
